Apart from this fault, the device is…

How the answer is worked out

The calculator uses the rule of thumb most technicians use: when a repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable replacement, replacing usually makes more sense. It then adjusts for age — a device near the end of its typical life gets less benefit from an expensive repair — and for condition, because a second fault is likely if the device already has other problems.

When repairing is the smarter choice

Batteries, screens, SSD upgrades and charging ports are often good value on a device that otherwise works well, and repairing keeps your setup and files exactly as they are. It also keeps electronics out of landfill. If you’re unsure, bring the device in: the diagnosis tells you exactly what’s wrong before you decide.

Questions about this tool

How accurate is the repair-or-replace answer?

It’s a guide, not a quote. Real repair prices depend on the exact model and fault, so use a written quote from a diagnosis for the final decision.

What counts as a comparable replacement?

A new or refurbished device that does the same job for you today, not necessarily the most expensive model. Many people need far less than they think.

Do you recycle devices that aren’t worth repairing?

Yes. We securely wipe the drive for free and take the device to a free BC electronics recycling depot for you.
